Multi-sport programs in NYC introduce young children — typically ages 2 to 7 — to a rotation of sports (soccer, basketball, t-ball, hockey, and others) in one class, so a child can find what they enjoy before specializing. Classes run 45 minutes to an hour, are heavy on games and movement, and for the youngest groups include a parent on the floor. They run year-round in gyms and indoor fields, which makes them one of the easier programs to find with real availability. Sneakers and comfortable clothes are all that's needed; equipment is provided. Ages 3 to 5 is where most programs start taking children without a caregiver in the room: classes stretch to 45 minutes, follow a set structure, and begin teaching real technique. Separation is the main adjustment for a child new to classes; many providers allow a parent to watch from the side for the first few sessions.
