Kids' martial arts classes in NYC — karate, taekwondo, jiu-jitsu, judo and kung fu among them — start around age 3 or 4 with "little dragons" style classes built on listening, balance and basic stances, and become more technical from about age 6. A first class is usually 30 to 45 minutes for the youngest students and up to an hour for older kids, with a formal opening, drills, partner work and a short cool-down. Most schools let a new student try a class or a short trial before buying a uniform; after that, expect a uniform (gi or dobok) and a belt-testing schedule. Look for schools that separate children by age and size for any partner or sparring work. Ages 3 to 5 is where most programs start taking children without a caregiver in the room: classes stretch to 45 minutes, follow a set structure, and begin teaching real technique. Separation is the main adjustment for a child new to classes; many providers allow a parent to watch from the side for the first few sessions.
